Synopsis
When the heir to MacKlenna Farm, paramedic Kit MacKlenna, discovers she is not who she thinks she is, she uses the magic ruby brooch to travel back in time to the mid-19th century American west to uncover her true identity. Her coming-of-age quest leads her down a dangerous path that could cost her not only her heart, but her life.
Scottish lawyer Cullen Montgomery has a well-planned future that doesn’t include an eccentric, risk-taking woman, but that doesn’t stop his defenses from slipping when he sees Kit risk her life to save her travelling companions. Will Cullen stay his course and fulfill his commitments in California, or will he surrender to the only woman whose heart beats to the same rhythm as his own?
My Review
Let me preface this review by saying that this is my first audiobook review, the first audiobook that I’ve ever listened to in its entirety. It was a different experience than reading, and while I enjoyed the novel, I think I still prefer to read over listen as I just absorb the story better and can get into the story a bit better. It took quite a few trips in the car before I was finally able to get into it.
I really enjoyed getting to know Kit, soaking up the details of her intriguing background – and having her story come full circle as she finally found out the truth about her heritage and where/when she came from. I loved the banter back and forth between Cullen and Kit. While it was nice getting to know Kit, I feel like Cullen was brushed past a little bit; I feel this is mostly because Kit and her story was center stage. We learned a little bit about Cullen, his background and where he came from but not to the same extent as Kit.
I would have liked to see where the other smaller characters endings wrapped up. Kit and Cullen left them behind and that was it. It would have been nice to seem them fleshed out completely as these smaller characters were influential to the mcs’ arc.
I also feel that everyone’s reaction including Cullen’s to Kit’s background and history, that she was a time traveler and such was underwhelming. There was no big conflict about it or anything. It felt kind of shrugged off. Kit spent all this time preparing for the past, and bringing and hiding things from her time away from everyone, and it felt like there was this big build up about it to then just fizzle off when everyone found out.
